There are over 25,000 orchid species in the wild and breeders have added tens of thousands with the hybrids they have cultivated.  Treasured throughout history for their exotic beauty and spectacular array of colors, orchids thrive in tropical climates and the varieties featured in this work can all be found in Hawaii.

In tracing 25 years of history since the trritory of Hawaii became the state of Hawaii, artist Jack Mattews focuses on the people. Not the movers and doers who shaped the issue, but the average all-of-us.

Depicted by the artist is an unusual parade. Because it proceeds not just along the parade route, but through time. The artist uses sepia to set the age tone of a parade that began in 1959. Then as Hawaii moved into the 1984 celebration, colors brighten the painting and we're all there, demonstrating the reality in today's world of Hawaii's gentle Aloha spirit.

This artwork was commissioned for use as the cover of the 1984 Hawaiian Tel Directories.
